An impacted tooth can develop for a variety of reasons, but the most common reasons include:
- The loss of primary canine or prolonged retention.
- There are arch length or tooth size discrepancies.
- The tooth bud is abnormally positioned.
- There are root dilacerations.

A child whose permanent teeth are erupting but lack adequate space for them to fully come in may need tooth exposure uncovery. It is important that all impacted teeth are given enough space to grow in to ensure the harmony of the smile.
Wisdom teeth which are impacted are often simply removed, but teeth in the front of the mouth and major molars required for chewing need to be enabled to come in fully. Canine teeth will easily become impacted if the neighboring teeth do not provide sufficient space. Also known as “eye teeth”, these teeth should be saved if possible. Canines can develop in the wrong position left with little to no room to grow in fully.
Impacted canine teeth are often camped in the roof of the mouth, behind other teeth. In some cases, the tooth come in along the natural arch, but only the tip of the tooth is showing past the gum line.

When the bite pressure of the mouth is not evenly distributed, it can cause some teeth to be overloaded and become damaged. Exposing the tooth, allowing it to come in fully, provides benefits in the form of a complete and aligned arch, better biting and chewing ability, and a more correct occlusion or bite.
The Tooth Exposure Uncovery Process
Before the procedure begins, East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry will perform an examination to determine the position of the problematic tooth. We will take x-rays or scans to determine the best approach for exposing the tooth.
If it is a simple procedure, we will begin by administering a local anesthetic. Once numb, we then start lifting the gum tissue over the tooth, which will allow for a bracket to be placed. Following the placement of this bracket, our team will return your gum to its original location and suture it back.
Next, we will schedule a follow up appointment. At this appointment, we will attach a rubber band to a chain on the bracket and begin a gentle pulling force, which will start the process of moving the tooth to its correct place. This is a gradual process.
