Dental Implants

Dental Implants Columbus, OH

Dental implants are restoration artificial teeth that are held securely in place with titanium posts that are surgically placed in your jawbone. The artificial crown tooth is attached to the post with an abutment or extension. Dental implants allow you to restore your smile with a solution that allows you to bite and chew normally. Dental implants also help to maintain the integrity of your jawbone density and save your jawbone from atrophying. This will also preserve your facial structure.

Dental implants are a procedure when East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry surgically places titanium posts below the gum-line. We add to that new root a replacement tooth or restoration. Dental implants have made significant strides over the past few decades, but there are still a few patients faced with missing teeth for whom this may not be the best option based on their oral health.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Improved Aesthetics: Dental implants will restore the appearance of your healthy smile as well as your jawline and prevent any changes in the shape of your face that can develop due to missing teeth.
  • Structural Integrity: By filling gaps, dental implants not only preserve the integrity of the original jawbone, but they also significantly reduce the likelihood of infections developing.
  • An Upgrade from Dentures: Because they are secured to your jawbone, dental implants will not have to be removed, like dentures, which will improve your ability to chew your favorite foods and speak comfortably.
  • Oral Health: Patients who have dental implants placed often claim an improved ability and likelihood to brush and floss regularly, which results in improved overall oral health.

The Cost of Your Dental Implants

The cost of your dental implants will vary depending on your individual needs and your treatment plan. We will discuss with you the cost of your treatment and each of your available payment options before we begin, so that you can make the best choice for your situation.

Dental Implant Procedure

It usually takes several visits and a few months to complete the dental implant process. The process will begin with an evaluation by East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry, who will determine if dental implants are the best option for you. We will focus primarily on evaluating what type of damage or decay your teeth are in and which teeth might need to be extracted. After this has been determined, our team will then perform an examination of your jawbone to ensure that the bone density and structural integrity are strong enough to support an implant.

If your jawbone is not strong enough, you may need to undergo a dental bone graft. Bone grafting has a high success rate and allows for a dental implant to be placed by providing sufficient bone mass for the post.

If you are a viable candidate for this procedure, the next step after any extractions, and cleaning the area, will be to surgically place the titanium post into your jawbone. Titanium is preferred because it is one of the few metals that naturally integrates with the bone. Once the post has had time to integrate with the bone, which takes a few months, we will make an appointment for the placement of the abutment or extension on to the post and then the final artificial crown. There are some cases where the tooth can be extracted, and the tooth placed on the same visit.

Dental Implant Aftercare

Following your dental implant procedure, the initial healing process can take a few weeks, so it is important to stick to a diet of soft foods, before gradually introducing harder foods into your diet. As any discomfort begins to subside, you can gradually return to your normal eating habits.

Once you have completely recovered, the most important thing is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits and take good care of your dental implants. Maintaining these good oral hygiene habits is essential to prevent additional disease from developing. Be sure to clean your implants if they are removable, and to brush twice daily and for at least two minutes each time you brush. Also maintain regular flossing habits and consider investing in antimicrobial mouth rinses.

Along with these important at-home care practices, it is also essential that you compliment your work by continuing to schedule regular visits with East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry. Visiting our team twice a year will allow us to perform professional cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, identifying issues before they develop.
