Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening Columbus, OH

Crown lengthening is a simple dental surgical procedure to remove excess gum tissue and sometimes bone. This exposes more of the natural tooth structure, and the treatment can be performed for several different reasons.

If you feel you show an excessive amount of gum tissue when you smile, called a gummy smile, you may benefit from this treatment at East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry. Our smile is one of the most important attributes of our appearance. If you are comfortable with your smile, it is easier to display self-confidence and self-esteem. If you are unhappy with your smile, it can reduce your self-confidence and make socializing more difficult.

When we visualize a healthy smile, usually the shape, color, and alignment of the teeth is what comes to mind. Our gums though are an important part of our smile. If you show too much gum tissue when you smile, it can make your face appear longer or make your teeth seem smaller. The balance and proportions of your smile can be adjusted with a crown lengthening procedure.

Are You a Candidate for Crown Lengthening?

If you are unhappy with your gummy smile you can be a candidate for this procedure. A development of excess gum tissue or uneven gum tissue can negatively affect your smile. Our team will reshape, also known as gum contouring, your gum line to shorten the excess gum tissue and visually increase the length of your teeth.

While it may seem an aesthetic issue, if you have a gummy smile, you may have an underlying issue as well. A gummy smile might be caused by how your jawbone developed. If your upper jawbone bulges out more than normal, it can appear to give you a gummy smile. While this is not something that can be initially prevented, it could cause an improper bite and possibly affect your long-term health.

Another reason as to why a gummy smile occurs is if you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles associated with this part of the mouth may pull the upper lip higher than where it normally should go. While this does not necessarily mean you have a gummy smile initially, it can give the illusion that you do. Nonetheless, this can be treated with a crown lengthening procedure.

Aesthetic Smile Enhancement

Excessive gums can be treated quickly and painlessly. We use a process called laser therapy treatment that will provide you a comfortable procedure.

East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry will first examine your smile to determine the extent of the gum tissue. A digital or traditional form of an impression will also be taken to determine your plan. An x-ray will also be taken so the imaging can show any unhealthy bone or tooth roots below the surface. This examination is essential to ensure you are healthy and you have a good amount of healthy jawbone and tooth roots available for the procedure to be performed. The best results come from a detailed plan.

The Crown Lengthening Procedure

Your crown lengthening procedure is performed after a local anesthetic is administered. The laser is pointed directly at the excess gums for removal. The laser does not produce any heat or vibration, making it a painless and easy treatment. The laser will also seal up all blood vessel, immediately resulting in less bleeding or swelling.

During the crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth.  If a surgical scalpel is used, sutures are placed to replace the gingival tissue around the tooth, and a band-aid material is placed around the tooth to allow the gingival tissue to heal correctly.

The crown lengthening can be done in a matter of minutes. Full healing time is usually expected to be completed in only a few days if the gum area being treated is minimal. It is not necessary to adjust your activity level or change your diet to quicken the healing process.
