Sinus Lift

Sinus Lift Columbus, OH

A sinus lift is a bone grafting procedure that will prepare the jawbone for dental implants when the sinuses are too close to the jawbone. By lifting the sinuses away from the jawbone, adequate space can be created for the bone to grow to support the new dental implants.

If you have experienced the loss of teeth in your upper jaw, you may require a sinus lift to have dental implants placed. The sinus lift becomes necessary when the area where the teeth are missing begins to shrink and change shape. When this happens, the sinuses will expand into the space where the bone once was. Because the dental implant requires sufficient bone to grow in to, a sinus lift will allow East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry to move your sinus to its original location and then place additional bone in the affected area.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Prior to the beginning of the procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered. Next the jawbone will be exposed by making small surgical incisions in both the molar and premolar regions. Then a small opening is made in the jawbone. This allows us access to the membrane that lines the sinus. This membrane of the sinus is then lifted. The space that this action creates will then be filled with a bone grafting material. Upon the completion of the implanting procedure, the opening is sutured closed, and the wound will begin to heal. Over the course of several months, the bone grafting material will be integrated into and become part of your jawbone. Now the new sinus bone will be capable of supporting stable dental implants.

There are some cases in which it is possible for both the sinus lift and the implant placement procedures to be done together at the same time. The deciding factor is whether both the upper jaw ridge and the bottom of the sinus have enough bone available to insure a stable implant. If they do, then both procedures can be performed in one visit. If this is not the case and there is not enough bone available, then two separate procedures will be required.

The first procedure will be the sinus lift. This will require several months for the bone graft to mature, although the exact amount of time will depend on the type of material used for the bone graft. Once the graft material has reached a level of maturity, the dental implants can then be safely installed.

A normal healing time for a sinus lift procedure is 4 to 9 months. After healing is completed, the dental implants can then be installed. The bone graft procedure then compensates for bone that has been lost, which in turn allows for the placement of multiple dental implants.

Materials Used in a Sinus Lift

To determine which treatment option is best for you, a thorough examination will be conducted. East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry may require x-rays or CT scans to help determine the best course of action. The source of the material is typically from donors, sterilized powdered bone obtained from a reputable bone bank.

The Cost of Your Sinus Lift

The cost of your sinus lift will vary depending on your individual needs and your treatment plan. We will discuss with you the cost of your treatment and each of your available payment options before we begin, so that you can make the best choice for your situation.

Post-Procedure Aftercare

Post-operative care following a sinus lift is incredibly important to reduce discomfort and avoid unnecessary complications, such as swelling or infection. One of the most important things to be mindful of is to avoid blowing your nose for the next month. If possible, also try to avoid sneezing as much as possible too. For those who suffer from allergies, prepare with a decongestant.

Beyond that, immediately following your sinus lift, you will want to make sure the gauze pad that is placed over the area where surgery occurred is kept in place and changed out until the bleeding stops. It is also important to avoid brushing or rinsing vigorously for some time following the surgery, as doing so can cause bleeding to start up again. It is alright to begin brushing your teeth the day after the surgery, but be mindful not to brush too hard, and to consider purchasing a soft toothbrush.
