Ridge Augmentation
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge Augmentation Columbus, OH
Ridge augmentation is used to reestablish your jaw’s natural contour. After a tooth is extracted, the jawbone will begin to weaken and deteriorate to the point of recession. The socket, once supported by the removed tooth, will shrink in both height and width. An indentation in the gums or jawbone where the tooth once was can now develop. This is because when a tooth is missing, your bite pressure is not exerted on the jawbone. This lack of pressure on the bone will result in shrinkage of the bone.
It is strongly suggested that you see us to replace a tooth soon after it falls out so that the jawbone does not atrophy too much too quickly. If you wait too long and your jawbone deteriorates too much, we will recommend a ridge augmentation to halt and reverse this process.

SERVICES
The Ridge Augmentation Procedure
During the ridge augmentation procedure, East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry will place soft gum tissue or hard bone tissue to the section of your mouth that needs to be managed. This surgical technique augments the bone or gum tissue of the section in your mouth for functionality and cosmetic purposes.
After the bone gains greater width, height, or both, a dental implant will have more stability in the jawbone, which will allow it to integrate successfully. We may recommend the ridge augmentation procedure for strictly aesthetic concerns, or in some cases, to secure dental implants in place if a tooth is missing or has been extracted.
There are two primary types of ridge augmentation procedure types: soft tissue or hard tissue.
If you are undergoing a soft tissue procedure, which is usually done for aesthetic reasons and to improve the cleanliness of the specific site, we will numb the area before the procedure begins. We will then make an incision to expose the site. Next, we will obtain a soft tissue graft from the roof of the mouth or a substitute for soft tissue and then insert the graft. We will then suture the affected area to begin the healing process.
Before you can undergo a dental implant placement, a hard tissue graft might be required. If so, the immediate area will be numbed before the procedure begins. Next, we will make an incision and lift the gum away to reveal the defected bone. The bone graft we will use will be secured from either another area within your mouth or from another source. Once the graft is in place, your gum tissue will be repositioned and sutured over the graft.
COMMON PERIODONTAL PROCEDURES
Why Would You Need a Ridge Augmentation?
- Your gum disease has caused the soft tissue to deteriorate.
- You suffer from developmental defects that have not allowed enough gum or bone tissue to form in areas of the mouth.
- You have experienced some oral trauma, such as a tooth that is impacted below the gum or bone tissue.
- Wearing your dentures has deteriorated the jawbone and affected the gums in surrounding areas.
- You have missing teeth which will cause a deterioration of the jawbone.
The Cost of Your Ridge Augmentation
- The cost of your ridge augmentation surgery will vary depending on your individual needs and your treatment plan. We will discuss with you the cost of your treatment and each of your available payment options before we begin, so that you can make the best choice for your situation.
Post Ridge Augmentation Surgery
Every ridge augmentation experience will vary, but it is conceivable that it could take up to one year to fully recover from your procedure. Be sure to discuss your recovery plan with East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry so you have a clear understanding of what steps you will need to take to continue improving your oral health.
Following your ridge augmentation procedure, you will need to avoid hard foods, as they can impact the sutures and potentially slow down the healing time. It is also a good idea to avoid sipping through a straw or smoking. It is also important to be aware that it is not uncommon if you have trouble chewing and talking following your ridge augmentation procedure.
Once you have completed the recovery process, the most important thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice your good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly.
Along with these important at-home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, we can conduct cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching any issues before they develop.
