Prior to your procedure, East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry will administer a local anesthetic. Once you are sufficiently numbed, a small incision will be made in your gum and it will be pulled back to access the root of the tooth and the surrounding bone. Once these are accessible, we will scrape off damaging deposits that have formed on the root surface and then recontour and trim the bone. For more advanced cases of periodontitis, a bone graft or guided tissue regeneration may be placed during this time. Once this is complete, your gum tissue will be reattached, and your healing process can begin.
Osseous Surgery Aftercare
Following your osseous surgery, it is important to follow the post-operative instructions. If you are prescribed any medication or antibiotics, follow the dosage instructions to completion. If you are not prescribed medication but experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers can usually help manage the discomfort. Some swelling is also common, but this can usually be managed with the use of ice packs. If you follow these instructions, your recovery process should be quick, although we will likely schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure everything looks right.
Once you have completed the recovery process, it will not be necessary to follow any special aftercare instructions, although it is important to be aware of the reason this procedure was necessary in the first place. You need to continue practicing good daily oral hygiene practices. Brush and floss twice daily, and schedule regular visits to East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry to ensure that your teeth receive regular professional cleanings, which will reduce your risk of developing more gingivitis or periodontitis. It might be necessary to schedule these visits with more frequency until you have fully corrected your periodontitis. If you follow these best practices, you will enjoy a healthy smile for years to come.
