Gingivectomy Gum Lift

Gingivectomy or Gum Lift

Gingivectomy Columbus, OH

A gingivectomy is the surgical removal of gingiva, the gum tissue.  A gingivectomy is necessary when your gums have pulled away from the teeth creating deep pockets. The pockets make it difficult to remove the plaque and calculus.  Gingivectomy should be done before the gum disease has damaged the bone supporting the teeth. The procedure involves removing and reshaping loose, diseased gum tissue to get rid of those pockets between the teeth and gums. By removing the pocket walls, a gingivectomy provides visibility and accessibility to remove calculus and thoroughly smooth the tooth below the surface.  This creates a favorable environment for the healing and restoration of the gum tissue.

A gingivectomy or gum lift is a simple surgical procedure that is performed to address oral health concerns, for cosmetic purposes, or to provide accessibility to remove damaging calculus. Similar in nature to crown lengthening, a gingivectomy does not require the removal of bone to achieve the same result, a gingivectomy involves the removal of a portion of gum tissue around the tooth, usually to correct gum disease.

If the team at East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry has recommended you have a gingivectomy to address your periodontitis, it is important to schedule the treatment as soon as you can. If left untreated, your gum disease can quickly accelerate and cause several issues to develop, including the decay and deterioration of your jawbone, and the loss of teeth. In addition to these oral health concerns, a growing number of studies indicate that chronic inflammation of your gums can lead to systemic inflammation, which will increase your risk of developing serious health issues, such as diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, or heart disease.

Benefits of A Gingivectomy

There is an assortment of benefits you will enjoy after having a gingivectomy or gum lift performed, including the following:

  • Aesthetically it will improve the appearance of your smile and boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • It can improve your ability to practice and maintain proper hygiene making it easier.
  • A gum lift will reduce the depth of damaging gum pockets.
  • A gingivectomy will remove diseased gum tissue.
  • The procedure treats periodontitis.

The Gingivectomy Procedure

The gingivectomy or gum lift procedure will be performed with a surgical scalpel or a low-frequency laser. Prior to the procedure, East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry will administer a local anesthetic to ensure that you experience no discomfort. Next, we conduct a careful examination to identify the diseased tissue and ensure the appropriate amount of tissue is removed. Once this has been identified, the diseased tissue will be removed by making small incisions. Once your diseased tissue has been removed, the gums will then be reattached and the area will be cleaned, and bandages will be placed on the area to protect your gums. If a laser is used it is much easier and cleaner to complete the treatment. Following this, your gingivectomy will be complete.

Gingivectomy Aftercare

Following your gingivectomy or gum lift, it is important to try to limit and minimize physical activity for the next three days. You may experience mild discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. This can usually be managed by an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, such as Ibuprofen. In more severe cases a medication may be prescribed, which can be taken in conjunction with the NSAID analgesic. It is also common to experience swelling after your gingivectomy, especially in your lower jaw. This can usually be treated with ice packs and in combination with an NSAID analgesic.

Once you have completed your recovery process, you will need to schedule a follow-up appointment with East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry to confirm the procedure was successful. If your gingivectomy was performed to address periodontal disease, it is important to address why this procedure was needed in the first place. Continue practicing your good daily oral hygiene practices. Brush and floss twice daily, and schedule regular visits to East Columbus Periodontic and Implant Dentistry to ensure that your teeth receive regular professional cleanings, which will reduce your risk of developing further gingivitis or periodontitis.
